An IEP meeting is an opportunity to discuss your child's educational needs and supports. Preparation can help parents participate more effectively and make sure important topics are addressed.
You do not need to understand every technical term before the meeting. A good preparation process starts with reviewing available information, identifying concerns, and organizing your thoughts.
Before the Meeting
Review the current IEP
Review the major sections:
- Present levels of performance
- Goals
- Services
- Accommodations
- Progress information
Make note of anything unclear or inconsistent with your understanding of your child.
Gather relevant information
Consider collecting:
- Previous IEPs
- Evaluations
- Progress reports
- Teacher communications
- Outside reports
- Examples of work
Identify your priorities
Think about:
- What is going well?
- What concerns you?
- What questions do you want addressed?
- What topics deserve additional discussion?
During the Meeting
Take notes
Important discussions can move quickly. Notes can help you track:
- Decisions made
- Questions raised
- Follow-up items
- Next steps
Ask questions
Preparing questions in advance can help ensure important topics are discussed.
See our guide: Questions to Ask at an IEP Meeting.
After the Meeting
Review the finalized IEP and make sure you understand:
- What was agreed upon
- What services and supports are included
- How progress will be monitored
- What happens next
How VantageIEP Can Help
VantageIEP provides a structured review of an IEP document to help parents better understand what is documented and identify questions for discussion.
It is designed to support preparation, not replace the role of families, educators, advocates, or attorneys.
